Proposal

The Ultimate Guide to Proposing at the Atlanta Botanical Garden

I get this inquiry more than you’d think: someone reaches out wanting to propose at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and they’ve already got a vision in their head — wandering a garden path, the perfect moment, flowers everywhere, the whole thing. And then I have to have a real conversation with them.

Because you might not know this but: you cannot just show up to the Atlanta Botanical Garden, propose, and have it photographed. It’s not allowed. There is no “winging it.” There is no “we’ll just find a quiet moment.” The garden has a structured, official proposal program — and if you want to pop the question there, that program is the only path.

This guide exists to walk you through exactly what that looks like, help you decide whether it’s the right fit for your relationship, and give you a better option if it isn’t.

First: What You Cannot Do

Before we get into what’s possible, let’s be clear on what isn’t.

You cannot hire a photographer, purchase regular admission, and have them show up to capture a surprise proposal. The garden’s professional photography permit is for personal photo sessions — not proposals. Proposals require the official package. Full stop.

You cannot propose during Garden Lights, Holiday Nights (mid-November through early January). That event is explicitly excluded from proposal availability.

You cannot book an after-hours proposal. The garden does not offer evening proposal packages.

You cannot just find a pretty corner and make it happen on your own. This will be stopped.

I’m not saying this to be discouraging. I’m saying it because the number of people who reach out to me with a plan that relies on one of these assumptions is genuinely high — and I’d rather you know now than after you’ve already put a date on the calendar.

The Official Atlanta Botanical Garden Proposal Program

The Atlanta Botanical Garden offers two proposal packages through their Special Events department. Here’s the current breakdown:

  • Garden admission for up to 5 guests
  • 1-hour private use of the Japanese Garden or Fragrance Garden

When You Can Book

Availability is limited, and it depends on the time of year.

Peak months (March–June and September–December): Proposals are available Tuesday through Friday only. No weekend availability during these months.

Off-peak months (July–August and January–February): Daily availability may open up, including weekends. But “may” is doing real work in that sentence — confirm directly.

Garden Lights season (mid-November through early January): No proposals available at all during this event.

After hours: Not available.

Contact the Garden Directly.

In researching this post alone, I found three different price points floating around online. The information above reflects what the garden shared most recently, but please do not rely on any blog — including this one — as your source of truth for pricing and availability.

Contact the Special Events Department directly before making any plans:

They’ll confirm current packages, available dates, and any restrictions that may have changed.

What’s Actually in Bloom (And When)

If you’re going through the effort of planning a proposal here, timing matters. Here’s a general guide to what you can expect each season at the garden:

Early Spring (March–April) Daffodils, cherry blossoms (about two weeks in mid-March), tulips, and dogwoods. The garden’s signature Atlanta Blooms! event runs March through April. This is peak season — visually stunning, but also the most restricted for weekend availability.

Late Spring–Summer (May–August) Azaleas, hydrangeas, roses, and lush tropical displays. Summer brings the Concerts in the Garden series — worth knowing about for crowd planning. Hot and humid; factor that into what you’re wearing.

Fall (September–November) Autumn foliage along the Canopy Walk, Scarecrows in the Garden, cooler temperatures. Still a peak availability period (Sept–Dec), so weekday-only for proposals.

Winter (January–February) Quieter crowds, Orchid Daze typically begins in February with one of the largest orchid collections open to the public. Off-peak pricing and potentially more flexibility on day of the week.

Parking for your Atlanta Botanical Gardens Proposal

The garden shares the SAGE Parking Facility with Piedmont Park. On a normal weekday, this is fine. On a weekend when Piedmont Park is hosting a festival — which happens regularly — make sure you’re factoring in extra time and make sure your guests are given a head’s up.

Is the Atlanta Botanical Garden Actually Right for Your Proposal?

Here’s the question I always want couples to sit with: Why this place?

If the Atlanta Botanical Garden is somewhere meaningful to your relationship — a first date, a place you go together, somewhere that genuinely represents something about your story — then the package is absolutely worth it. You’re getting a private space, a dedicated staff member, and an experience that’s been thought through. For the right couple, this is a dream.

But if your answer is “it looked pretty on Instagram” or “I just wanted a garden,” then Ii want you to know that there are potentially better options for you. Options with more flexibility, fewer restrictions, no weekday-only windows, and potentially more room to make the moment feel like you.

A few questions to help you decide:

  • Do either of you have a real connection to this specific place?
  • Are you okay with a Tuesday–Friday proposal (if booking in peak months)?
  • Is your guest count five or under, or do you need the premium package?
  • Are you prepared to plan this weeks — potentially months — in advance to get your date?
  • Does a structured, staffed, standing-room setup feel right for the two of you, or does it feel too formal?

There are no wrong answers. But they should be your answers.

Not a Fit? — Here’s What I’d Suggest Instead

If you love the garden but the proposal package limitations (weekdays only, fixed spaces, one hour) aren’t working for you, consider this: propose somewhere else, then come back for your engagement session.

A professional photo session permit at the Atlanta Botanical Garden runs $500 for up to 10 people for a two-hour session — and with that, we have significantly more flexibility in how we move through the space, what we capture, and how your session unfolds. You get the garden backdrop, the flowers, the whole aesthetic — without the constraints of the proposal program.

If that sounds like a better fit, let’s talk about building your proposal and your engagement session into a plan that actually works for your story.
