Some elopement locations feel iconic the second you arrive. Others feel like you accidentally stumbled into something special. Leigh Lake is the second kind. Located in the Jenny Lake area of Grand Teton National Park, a Leigh Lake elopement offers still water, mountain reflections, evergreen-lined trails, and—depending on timing—surprising privacy for such a well-loved part of the park. It’s the kind of place where you don’t feel rushed, staged, or watched. You just… exist together for a bit.
If you’re picturing a lake elopement in the Tetons that feels calm, genuine, and not overly crowded — you’re going to want to keep reading.

Leigh Lake: The Vibe + What Makes It Special
Leigh Lake sits just north of String Lake, near the Jenny Lake region of the park and feels like stepping into the quieter side of Grand Teton National Park.
When I’m leading couples through this area, it often flows like: String Lake → Leigh Lake → around the loops…and you get all these subtle variations in scenery without a long drive.

If you’re mapping out your overall Grand Teton adventure, I break down more of my favorites in my Grand Teton National Park elopement guides.
Start with that big picture here. And if you’re curious about the best overall spots for a wedding or elopement in the Tetons, I lean into that list here.
When I photographed here, we moved through:
- Leigh Lake itself (quiet, reflective, wildly underrated)
- Nearby sections closer to String Lake
- Forested trails connecting the two
This is one of the reasons this area works so well for elopements: you get multiple backdrops without relocating your entire day.
You Get:
- Lakeside shoreline
- Mountain backdrops
- Evergreen forests
- Occasional fall color
- Open water reflections
- Rocky outcroppings you can walk out onto

It never feels repetitive and it never feels overproduced. A lot of folks go to Jenny Lake — and don’t get me wrong, Jenny Lake is gorgeous (and worth visiting) — but Leigh Lake feels like it’s just you and the trees and the Tetons. It’s especially perfect for couples who want a lake elopement that doesn’t feel orchestrated.
P.S. Leigh Lake is also one of my go-to Plan B elopement locations when Schwabacher Landing permits are unavailable — offering the same peaceful, reflective feel with way more flexibility.
Seasonal Access & the Winter Closure
Leigh Lake closes for the winter months. This isn’t a snow-covered, winter elopement location.
If you want winter wonderland aesthetics, this isn’t your place because access is restricted when snow hits hard. But come spring, summer, or fall — especially fall — Leigh Lake is stunning:
- Clear water access
- Trails you can actually hike
- Wildlife sightings (we saw deer near String Lake!)
- Space to wander without bumping into crowds
And side note — always check current park closures before you plan.

What a Leigh Lake Elopement Actually Feels Like
The loop between String Lake and Leigh Lake is one of my favorite ways to move through this area. You’ll find:
- A perfect little bridge over water with incredible reflections
- Rocky shorelines you can walk onto
- A feeling of space — even when it’s a popular summer day
- Subtle forest light and mountain views that shift as you walk
I mean, just look at how much variety you have without relocating your whole day. That’s gold for elopement timelines.
Plus — you can build your day around other awesome local spots like Cascade Canyon Turnout. I go deep on that in this blog post.

Sunrise, Midday, and Sunset at Leigh Lake
One of the coolest things about this area is how flexible it feels.
- Sunrise: Maybe plan somewhere quieter elsewhere in the park (great for first looks).
- Midday: Leigh Lake is beautiful — the reflections and soft light are so good right around this time.
- Sunset: If you catch the light right, there’s a peaceful glow over the water that feels so cinematic.
Back when I photographed here, I found that midday light didn’t kill the vibe — which is uncommon for lakes in the mountains. That tells me this spot really works at different times, depending on your elopement flow.

Nearby Spots to Build a Full Elopement Day
One of Leigh Lake’s biggest strengths is how much is nearby:
- Jenny Lake overlooks
- Campgrounds (yes, you can camp + elope nearby)
- Hidden Falls
- Moose Pond
- Paintbrush Canyon + Upper Paintbrush
- Cascade Creek
- Ramshead Lake
- Symmetry Spire views
You could genuinely spend an entire elopement day in this area alone and never feel bored or boxed in.

Is a Leigh Lake Elopement Right for You?
Yes if you want:
- Quiet lake + peak mountain views
- A flexible timeline
- A bit of hiking/exploring
- A vibe that feels still and natural
Maybe not if you’re dreaming of:
- Snowy, winter-only photos
- Wildflower + super vibrant alpine blooms (those are higher elevation)
If you’re piecing together your Tetons wedding vision and want help crafting a day that feels like you, this is absolutely a place to consider.

Next Steps (Without the Overwhelm)
Here’s how I recommend building around Leigh Lake:
- Start broad: Explore the overall park and possible spots – Head to this blog to see my top picks.
- Pick your vibe: Not everyone wants the same lighting or pace. If water and reflection is your jam, Leigh is perfect.
- Add a backup plan: Weather shifts fast in the Tetons.
- Chat about packages: My goal is to help you plan with confidence, not just show up with a camera.
