LGBTQ+ Affirming Wedding & Elopement Photographer in Alabama

Finding a wedding or elopement photographer is vulnerable for anyone. But for LGBTQ+ couples in Alabama, there’s often an extra layer underneath that decision.

You’re not just wondering if you like their photos. You’re trying to figure out if you can actually relax around them. If they’ve worked with queer couples before. If they’re going to make assumptions about your relationship, misgender you, or quietly try to fit you into roles that don’t belong to you.

Those concerns are completely valid.

I’m Raven, a documentary wedding and elopement photographer based north of Atlanta, and I work with couples throughout the Southeast, including Alabama. Many of the couples who reach out from Alabama tell me they’re looking for someone they don’t have to second-guess. Someone they can simply exist around.

That’s exactly the environment I create.

What being LGBTQ+ affirming actually means in practice

Being affirming isn’t about saying the right thing once. It shows up in how I approach people from the very beginning.

I ask for pronouns as part of getting to know you. I don’t assume roles or dynamics. I don’t use gendered language unless you do first.

It also means you can see yourself in my work. There isn’t one kind of couple I’m comfortable showing and another kind I’m not. The weddings and elopements on my website reflect the actual range of people I photograph, so no one has to guess whether they belong here.

You don’t have to perform for the camera

A lot of people worry about how they’ll look in photos, especially if they’ve spent time in environments where affection or vulnerability didn’t always feel safe to show openly.

My zone of genius is photographing people who don’t love having their photo taken. The magic of documentary photography is that it doesn’t ask you to be anything but yourself. There are no posing templates and no shot list. I pay attention to how you stand near each other, the way you reach for each other without thinking, the way your people show up around you, and I document what’s already happening.

Most couples tell me they stop thinking about the camera pretty quickly. Not because they’re trying harder, but because they realize they don’t have to.

LGBTQ+ weddings often carry a deep sense of community

One of the things I notice most consistently at LGBTQ+ weddings is how intentional the support around the couple feels. At Kristy and Michelle’s wedding, their entire community surrounded them during their first look, sharing in the emotion of the moment. At Izzi and Tiona’s wedding, Tiona was welcomed into the family with an angel wing pin, a small object carrying enormous meaning.

These moments aren’t staged. They’re real reflections of the relationships people have built, and that’s what I’m there to document.

My experience photographing LGBTQ+ weddings across the Southeast

Photographing LGBTQ+ weddings has been a core part of my work for 17+ years. Long before it was widely represented or easy to find, I was working with couples who didn’t see themselves reflected in the wedding industry, people who wanted their relationships documented honestly, without being reshaped into something more familiar or expected.

I don’t assume I know what your day will look like or what moments will matter most. Every couple creates their own version of this, and my role is to document it as it unfolds.

Alabama wedding and elopement locations I serve

I’m based north of Atlanta, and my wedding packages include up to a 4-hour one-way drive, so many Alabama couples are covered by the base packages. That includes:

  • Birmingham, Alabama
  • Huntsville, Alabama
  • Auburn, Alabama

If you’re planning a wedding in one of those cities, travel is already built in. For anywhere else in Alabama, reach out and I’ll put together a custom quote.

Questions couples ask

Do you photograph elopements in Alabama?
Yes. I photograph weddings and elopements across Alabama, including Birmingham, Huntsville and Auburn.

Do you charge extra to travel to Alabama?
Base wedding and elopement packages for Alabama include up to a 4-hour one-way drive. Further than that and I’ll create a custom quote for you!

What’s the difference between an elopement and a micro wedding?
Elopements & microweddings fall under the same umbrella, for me. But an elopement is 10 or fewer guests, not counting you and your partner. A micro or intimate wedding is 10 to 25.

Will I be asked to pose?
No. I don’t use posing templates or a shot list. I watch how you actually interact and document it.

You deserve to feel comfortable being fully yourself

The right photographer won’t make you feel like you need to explain who you are. They won’t try to translate your relationship into something else. They’ll respect you, pay attention, and document your day in a way that reflects what it actually felt like to be there.

If you’re planning a wedding or elopement in Alabama, I’d be honored to be invited into your sacred space. Tell me what you’re planning!

The goal? A full story that’s wild, real, beautiful — so anyone looking at your photos feels like they were there.
