North Georgia Engagement Session Locations

One of the things I love most about being an Atlanta wedding photographer is that Georgia {particularly North Georgia}  is full of so many incredible locations for engagement sessions and wedding days. There’s truly something for everyone I work with – whether they’re outdoorsy people, artsy people, or people who love spending Saturdays at home with the people they love. Every session and wedding day that I photograph is as unique as the people in my camera frame – and I freaking love that. While some couples know exactly the vibes they’re looking for when we plan their engagement session, not everyone does and that’s totally cool. I’m sharing some of my favorite ideas for the perfect North Georgia engagement session today!

Hiking Engagement Sessions

I LOVE going hiking with my couples for their engagement photos! There’s something rally special about documenting a couple doing something they love – plus who doesn’t love a good hike in the North Georgia mountains? This area is full of great hikes and beautiful landscapes. If you’re really into hiking, we can find some amazing trails. But if you’re not, there’s some gorgeous nature options that are more easily accessed {yet still give you those nature vibes you want!}. North Georgia has incredible state parks and awesome nature preserves that give us sunflower fields, lavender farms, and other beautiful options. So, if you want incredible views, let’s talk about your vision and figure out which spots will be best for you in the area. We’ve got it all – waterfalls, mountains, fields, and views for days.

Cloudland is perfect for the avid hiker or someone who just wants a gorgeous overlook with views of the canyon!

Sweetwater Creek State Park in Lithia Springs

I love this easy walking trail that runs right along the ruins of a textile mill on Red Trail. Beautiful way to spend an afternoon.

I also highly recommend AllTrails for trail research.

Downtown Areas

If the rural thing isn’t your vibe, North Georgia is known for its unique cities. Two of my favorites are Helen, GA and Dahlonega, GA. Both of these are really special villages that remind me of a Hallmark movie, if I’m being totally honest. Helen reminds me of an Alpine Village and is known for its local vineyards. There’s some great hikes around Helen and some of my favorite state parks are nearby, too. Every fall, they host a huge Oktoberfest celebration – it’s really quite charming!

Dahlonega is one of the best places to visit in the winter! It looks like a Christmas card – or the set of a Hallmark holiday movie. I love their town square and the area is full of delicious places to eat. If you’re hoping for cozy small-town vibes for your engagement session, you can’t go wrong with either of these sweet places!

Wineries, Vineyards, & Apple Orchards {oh my!}

Another great option in North Georgia for engagement sessions is something outdoors with a built-in activity. Our amazing local wineries, vineyards, apple orchards and pumpkin patches come to mind. I’m a huge fan of documenting my couples doing things they love so if there’s something seasonal you do together, let’s photograph it! Pumpkin patches and apple orchards are so beautiful, especially in the fall, and they lend themselves better to engagement sessions. Of course, in earlier seasons, there’s always lavender farms or wildflower patches. You truly can’t go wrong with any of those options!

Must Bring Items for Your North Georgia Engagement Session

Once you’ve decided on where to have your session {the vibes!}, it’s time to plan what you need to bring with you the day of your photos. Now, this list will definitely depend on where we’re going & what we’re doing – but it will get you started!

  1. Permits: Depending on the location you picked, we might need photography permits. These have to be reserved before your session, so we’ll definitely talk about this beforehand.
  2. A Blanket: Grass itches, friends. Bring your favorite blanket – or at least one that you don’t mind getting a little dirty during your photos. Pay attention to the color of the blanket and what you’re wearing so they don’t clash!
  3. Layered Clothing: Unless your session is in the middle of the summer, plan to layer up – especially if you’re hiking into the mountains at all. The air will definitely be cooler so plan ahead.
  4. Hiking Shoes: If we’re hiking, bring your boots. I promise I’ll give you time to change out of them if you want to for some of your portraits!

Choosing the perfect location for your engagement session comes down to you as a couple. What do you like to do together? What sort of location feels like a natural extension of who you are? And of course, does the spot inspire you or make you feel comfortable? No matter where we go for your engagement photos, I want to capture your love – in the way that makes you feel the most beautiful and like your true selves.
