Oakland Cemetery Family Portraits // Kris, JP, & Sidney
Getting to know Kris & JP while we were planning their session was such a treat. There are tons of cute little aspects that make their family unique and special. And, there were so many things I wanted to make sure I captured. But the biggest thing that stood out for me was their love of walking around Oakland Cemetery together as a family, especially for some outside time during the initial COVID lockdown. What really sinched Oakland Cemetery for me as the setting for our family portrait session, however, was the fact that their child Sidney took her first steps there! I couldn’t believe it, what a monumental and awesome thing.
Oakland Cemetery Family Portraits
So we headed out to Oakland Cemetery on one of Atlanta’s incredible fall days. If you’re unfamiliar with the location, you might think it odd that anyone would choose a cemetery as a portrait session location. {First of all, set your session wherever makes sense for YOU! Everyone else be damned.} But Oakland is different. From their website directly, “Historic Oakland Cemetery is Atlanta’s oldest public park and the final resting place of many of the city’s most noted citizens. Less than a mile from downtown, its 48 acres are full of treasures – history and gardens, sculpture and architecture, ancient oaks and magnolias. It’s a wedding venue, a green space, an art gallery, a classroom space, and a place to celebrate the city’s rich and fascinating past and its promising future.”
{You read that right, Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta is also a wedding venue! I’ve photographed at this location plenty of times. But, I’m dreaming of the day when I get to photograph a wedding there!}
This gorgeous park worked perfectly for a family session! There was so much to do, see, and explore together. We followed Sidney, letting them lead the way. That’s how I always try to be during sessions involving children – and only directing when necessary. We stopped for snacks, talked about plants and flowers, sat on benches together, played at the fountain, and generally had an amazing time together. Whenever Sidney needed a break, we took one, and made sure to grab some Kris & JP shots as well! Sidney is an incredibly bubbly & intelligent child, and the love in this family is so evident and strong, both as a family unit and also for Kris & JP as a couple. It was a complete pleasure to capture you all!
