Planning Your Engagement Session

The days of generic engagement sessions? Yeah, we’re leaving those behind. Meeting a photographer you’ve never met at a random park, striking the same three poses? Done. And thank the stars for that! Every couple has their own reasons for a session: practicing for the big day, capturing content for Save the Dates, or just getting cute photos for the ‘gram. Maybe you’re newly engaged, been in it for months, or you’re not even technically engaged yet. Whatever your reason, showing up authentically is key.

So, what does being authentic even mean?

  • It’s dropping the pretense. No forced smiles.
  • Not pretending you’re someone you’re not. (Spoiler alert: you’re already awesome as you are.)
  • Reflecting your personality and story in your photos.
  • Seeing those photos ten years from now and still feeling like, “Yeah, that’s us.”

Whether it’s a session at your fave pizza spot, a wander through Costco (yes, I’ve done it!), or snuggles on the couch with your pets—what feels real and meaningful to you is always the right answer. It’s about telling your story, not some version of it. And the more comfortable you are, the better those photos are gonna be. Trust me!

Choosing a Location

Planning doesn’t have to feel like a chore. It’s about building something together. Starting at the discovery call, I’ll ask you all about your life: How did you meet? What does your ideal weekend look like? Do you have a special spot that’s “yours”? That’s where the magic happens—making it a slice of life and not just a photo shoot.

  • Start with a spot you love.
Your home, making breakfast together? Grabbing drinks at your favorite restaurant or bar? Walking the dog at your go-to park? If it’s meaningful to you, it’s perfect for your session, and that love will shine through in the photos.
  • Make it fun with an activity.
Whether it’s making drinks or food together, playing a board game, or cuddling a pet, it lets you focus on each other instead of the camera. Plus, it’s a great way to capture your natural, everyday dynamic.

What to Wear

When it comes to outfits, forget the pressure to look “perfect. You want to feel you instead of like you’re playing dress-up for a magazine shoot. The right outfit is one that makes you feel comfortable, confident, and lets your personality shine through. Here are a few tips to keep it simple:

  • Wear something that fits well and feels great on you (The Golidlocks outfit: not too tight, not too loose, but juuust right.)
  • Choose colors that complement each other. No need to match perfectly—this isn’t 1998 family portrait day!
  • Stick to your style. Whether it’s casual or glam, if it feels like you, that’s what’s gonna look best in photos.

And feel free to bring a second outfit if you want! Check out more advice on what to wear here.

Should You Bring Props?

Ah, the age-old question. Should you bring props to your engagement session? My answer: Only if it adds to your story. Props aren’t necessary but can be fun if they’re meaningful and you’re excited about them. Think about:

  • Including your pet, easy cuddles on the couch or playing in the yard.
  • Something that calls back to important milestones in your relationship, like the proposal or your first date or your favorite piece of every day.
  • Champagne or sparkling juice to pop and cheers with.

If it’s personal and helps tell your story, go for it. If it’s just to fill space or feels forced, leave it out. Simple as that.

Meet Your Photographer

I’m Raven Shutley — Atlanta wedding and elopement photographer obsessed with catching the “holy shit!” magic you’ll brag about for decades. 17+ years. 250+ love-soaked, champagne-soaked, sometimes-rain-soaked weddings. Zero boring ones.

The best days are full of “did that really happen?” moments and quiet ones alike: yelling vows over a waterfall, grandma losing her mind over your shoes, strangers cheering you on in the street. A dad-turned-unofficial paparazzi, a sibling choking up mid-speech, that deep breath the moment you realize you’re married.

The goal? A full story that’s wild, real, beautiful — so anyone looking at your photos feels like they were there.
