Emily and Joseph had their engagement session with me in their first home in Charlotte, North Carolina, so I was deeply honored to be apart of their wedding ceremony and reception days!

For their ceremony, they gathered a very small group of their closest people and met at Asheville Botanical Gardens. It was a freakishly cold November day, quiet and moody in a way that suited them perfectly. Emily wore a dramatic black gown and veil, her brothers walked her down the aisle, and their closest friend officiated as they signed their marriage license together.

As a documentary photographer, I’m always drawn to places that allow people to slow down and stay present. An Asheville Botanical Gardens elopement works beautifully for that. The space is calm and grounded, with enough visual variety to keep things interesting without ever feeling overwhelming or staged. It’s the kind of place where the day can unfold naturally while I focus on documenting what actually happens.

Why Choose Asheville Botanical Gardens for Your Elopement

The Asheville Botanical Gardens feel tucked away, even though they’re right in the city. Once you cross the bridge into the gardens, everything softens. The pace changes. You’re surrounded by trees, open green spaces, and winding paths instead of buildings and noise.

Elopements here are coordinated directly through the gardens, and the setting lends itself especially well to small, intentional ceremonies. Rather than feeling like a traditional elopement venue, it feels like borrowing a peaceful outdoor space for a moment that matters.

Ceremony Locations Within the Gardens

Emily and Joseph held their ceremony near the small pergola just past the bridge — a spot that feels naturally ceremonial without needing much added to it. The gardens offer several areas like this, where you can gather without blocking paths or disrupting the environment.

Because everything is outdoors, the experience feels open and unforced. Guests can spread out slightly, listen closely, and remain connected to what’s happening instead of feeling packed into a rigid setup.

Light, Late Fall, and Letting the Day Breathe

Late fall at Asheville Botanical Gardens has a quiet kind of beauty. The landscape is softer, the colors more muted, and the light more even. On this particular day, the late-afternoon light paired beautifully with the cool air, creating a calm, atmospheric feel throughout the ceremony and portraits.

From a photography perspective, this kind of light and environment allows moments to happen without interruption. There’s no pressure to rush. No need to manufacture movement. You can simply walk, pause, and exist together.

Exploring the Gardens After the Ceremony

One of the things I love most about Asheville Botanical Gardens is how much there is to explore within a relatively compact space. After the ceremony, Emily and Joseph wandered the paths with their people, stopping wherever felt right.

There are bridges tucked into the landscape, open fields, and quieter corners like the birdwatching platform, where you can take a breath and take it all in. Signing their marriage license there felt especially fitting — surrounded by nature & unhurried.

My Advice for an Asheville Botanical Gardens Elopement

If you’re planning an elopement here, my biggest advice is to embrace the pace. This venue shines when you don’t try to cram too much into a short window. Let the ceremony be the focus. Build in time to wander. Allow space for quiet conversations and small moments.

This is not a venue that wants to be rushed — and that’s exactly what makes it special.

If you’re planning an Asheville Botanical Gardens Elopement and want photos that reflect the calm, presence, and intimacy of the day, I’d love to document it. Let’s talk about what you’re envisioning.
