If you remember Erika & Cooper’s engagement session, you’ll recognize a few familiar faces, and I don’t mean just the couple themselves, but also their dogs, who were lucky enough to be a part of their Cator Woolford Gardens wedding day too! Including pets on your wedding day isn’t always possible, which makes it all the sweeter when the stars align and couples ARE able to!

Their First Look
Erika & Cooper’s first look took place at the top of the iconic grand stairs leading to the historic house at Cator Woolford Gardens. This spot is a favorite for couples because of its dramatic, timeless backdrop. The couple also exchanged private letters before the ceremony, carving out a few quiet, meaningful moments just for them. I just love when couples are able to share an intimate moment together before the busyness of the day sets in.

Outdoor Wedding Ceremony
After the first look, we moved down to the main lawn space for the ceremony. Erika & Cooper chose a loved one as their officiant, which made the vows even more personal and heartfelt. The day was hot and sticky, so it was helpful to have a spot to cool off before the ceremony. Check out my Summer Wedding Survival Tips.

As the ceremony drew to a close, a light sprinkle began. Erika & Cooper were super chill about getting a little damp during vows. They smiled and shrugged at each other, embracing the moment. However, by the end, they made a dramatic exit amid the strengthening storm, which progressed to full on downpour. Everyone gathered under the beautiful tented area for Cocktail hour, enjoying the sound of a live string quartet (who also played during the ceremony).

Cator Woolford Gardens Wedding Reception
Their reception inside continued the community-focused energy that was woven throughout the day. Guests shared heartfelt toasts that caused a few tears to be shed. The celebration continued as the newlyweds and their guests danced late into the evening, and later enjoyed a late-night snack of ice cream sandwiches!
Cator Woolford Gardens Post-Wedding Portrait Session

As a documentary photographer, I’m drawn to places that give couples the freedom to just be. Cator Woolford Gardens is one of those rare Atlanta venues where you don’t need to add much of anything—it’s already alive with light, greenery, and texture. From the way the sun filters through the trees to the winding paths that lead you from one pocket of the gardens to another, it’s a setting that lets your story unfold naturally.
It’s not about staging a picture-perfect version of your day. It’s about the quiet ease of walking together down a shaded path, the glow of golden hour on the garden lawn, or the laughter spilling out while your people gather under the pergola. Cator Woolford Gardens gives you all the space to slow down, savor, and celebrate.
My Advice for a Cator Woolford Gardens Wedding
- Take the golf carts. Moving from the bottom lawn to the top house? Don’t trek across the grass—hop in the golf carts. It’s faster, easier, and you’ll save your shoes.
- Use the getting ready space wisely. It’s charming but cozy. Perfect as a holding room or touch-up space, but not quite large enough for both partners to get ready separately.
- There are multiple ceremony spots to choose from. The garden lawn is a classic choice and the pergola offers structure and shade.
- Make time to wander. Couples’ portraits through the garden paths, up the hill by the house, or by the lawn over the water—every turn is worth exploring.
- Think about timing. Golden hour ceremonies here are magic. The light softens across the lawn and filters beautifully through the trees.

About Cator Woolford Gardens
Tucked away behind Fernbank Museum, Cator Woolford Gardens feels like a hidden oasis right in the middle of Atlanta. It’s lush, green, and full of layered spaces—part manicured garden, part quiet woodland.
The gardens shine in spring when everything blooms, but they’re equally beautiful in early fall when the forest edges might catch a hint of changing foliage. Honestly, it’s hard to go wrong here. The grounds stay inviting year-round, giving you that timeless, natural backdrop no matter when you plan your wedding.

Photography Opportunities at Cator Woolford Gardens
What makes this venue a dream to photograph is the variety:
- The staircase—iconic for portraits and group shots.
- The garden lawn—ideal for wide, sweeping ceremony photos.
- The pergola—romantic, structured, and great in softer light.
- The footbridge and paths—sweet, tucked-away spots for a more intimate feel.
- The forest edge—lush greenery that adds texture and depth.
And if you want to mix in something beyond the gardens, Fernbank Museum is just a short drive away and makes a fun stop for additional portraits.

Make the Day Your Own
Cator Woolford Gardens works best when you lean into its natural beauty. You don’t need over-the-top décor—the venue already carries its own sense of wonder. What you can do is:
- Start slow with a quiet morning together before arriving.
- Hold your ceremony on the lawn, then wander the gardens for portraits.
- Let guests mingle on the paths and lawns during cocktail hour.
- Use the house and surrounding areas for a mix of indoor/outdoor celebration.
The best weddings here are the ones that feel unhurried, where you actually get to spend time with each other and your people in a space that feels like it’s holding the day for you.
