Planning something like this? See how elopement photography with me works.

Emily and Joseph had their engagement session with me in their first home in Charlotte, North Carolina, so I was deeply honored to be apart of their wedding celebration!

The day after their ceremony, Emily and Joseph gathered again — this time in Downtown Asheville — to celebrate with their people at Circa 29. Everyone got ready together at the Airbnb where family and close friends were staying, turning the lead-up into a communal, relaxed experience before heading out for the night.

As a documentary photographer, I love reception spaces that encourage connection instead of performance. A Circa 29 wedding does exactly that. The layout, lighting, and atmosphere invite people to mingle, sit where they want, and move through the evening naturally — which makes for honest, layered storytelling.

What Circa 29 Is Like as a Wedding Venue

Circa 29 is a speakeasy-style venue tucked into downtown Asheville. Inside, the lighting is low and moody, with neon accents, a walk-up bar, and a mix of seating that feels more like a lounge than a traditional reception hall.

Rather than one large open room, the space is arranged in a way that naturally creates pockets of conversation. People gather on couches, at the bar, and around small tables. It feels social and relaxed from the moment guests arrive.

Reception Flow and Guest Experience

This venue works especially well for cocktail-style receptions. There’s plenty of room to dance if that’s the vibe, but no pressure for everyone to be on the dance floor at once.

At Emily and Joseph’s reception, friends prepared the food themselves — a deeply personal choice that fit seamlessly into the space. Guests grabbed food, settled into cushy chairs, and listened to heartfelt speeches from wherever they were sitting. The whole night felt less like an “event” and more like a gathering.

Photography Inside Circa 29

From a photography standpoint, Circa 29 offers rich visual texture without needing extra décor. Neon signs, dark corners, and layered seating create depth in images, while the bar and dance area keep energy moving through the space.

Because guests are spread out and comfortable, moments happen everywhere — laughter on a couch, a quiet conversation at the bar, a sudden burst of dancing when the music hits just right.

Why Downtown Asheville Works So Well for Receptions

Having your reception in downtown Asheville gives you flexibility. You can meet up beforehand, wander outside for a breath of air, or head elsewhere after the party winds down. Circa 29 fits naturally into that kind of celebration — central, walkable, and surrounded by options without needing to over-plan.

My Advice for a Circa 29 Wedding

If you’re considering Circa 29, lean into what the space does best. Let it be social. Let people sit where they want. Don’t over-structure the night. This venue shines when the focus is on conversation, connection, and letting the evening unfold organically.

If you’re planning a Circa 29 wedding or a Downtown Asheville reception that feels intimate, atmospheric, and unforced, I’d love to document it. Reach out and let’s talk through what you’re imagining.
