Christmas Celebration in Birmingham

Jessica and Matt built their Birmingham wedding around two things that were genuinely theirs: the family church where the ceremony had always happened in their minds, and the Clubhouse on Highland for a reception that felt laidback, intimate, and completely festive. It was Christmas week. It was the kind of day that made you feel it.

We started at Railroad Park nearby, one of my favorite unexpected spots in Birmingham, before the ceremony even began.

The Day

Jessica grew up in Birmingham, and that shaped every decision they made. The ceremony was at St. Elias Maronite Church, the family’s church, which grounded the day in something real and specific rather than a venue chosen for aesthetics. From there, the reception moved to the Clubhouse on Highland.

What made this day especially memorable was how intentional Jessica and Matt were about protecting the parts of it that mattered most to them. Their first dance happened upstairs, just the two of them and my camera. No audience, no performance, no one watching. Just them, in that moment, completely present. It’s one of the most quietly beautiful things I’ve documented.

The reception carried the Christmas theme through every detail: tree ornament favors, a champagne tower for the toasts, mistletoe. Under 60 guests, which meant they actually got to spend time with the people they love rather than moving through a receiving line all night. They knocked out the main events early and spent the rest of the evening just being there.

About the Clubhouse on Highland in Birmingham

The Clubhouse on Highland is located at 2908 Highland Avenue South in the Highland Park neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama. Built in 1910 by Molly and William S. Brown, it was designed as a home for grand entertaining, with an open floor plan, expansive front porch, and courtyard. It later served as the home of the Alabama Federation of Women Club’s 3rd District for over 60 years, and continues its charitable legacy today through the Community Center of South Decatur.

The building is widely considered the finest Arts and Crafts style home in Birmingham. The interior features classic hardwood floors, elegant lighting, and the kind of historic character that does most of the decorating work on its own. The covered front porch and outdoor spaces can accommodate larger receptions up to 400 guests, while the interior suits intimate gatherings beautifully.

The Clubhouse is available seven days a week in two blocks: 7am to 3pm or 3pm to 11pm. It honors diversity, inclusion, and self-expression and welcomes all couples. Open membership is available for $10 per year. Rental fees run approximately $3,000 to $3,500 for wedding events. Railroad Park: First Look and Portraits

Before the ceremony, we used Railroad Park for Jessica and Matt’s first look and portraits — a 19-acre greenspace along 1st Avenue South in downtown Birmingham between 14th and 18th Streets. Known as Birmingham’s “Front Lawn,” it celebrates the city’s industrial and artistic heritage and offers a surprising range of portrait backdrops: open lawn, water features, architectural elements, and views of the Birmingham skyline. It’s free to the public and open 365 days a year.

The first look at Railroad Park gave Jessica and Matt unscheduled time together before the ceremony, away from the family church and the reception venue, in a space that felt like the city they were in. For a Christmas wedding, the park’s open, architectural character created a clean contrast to the warmth of the Clubhouse on Highland later in the evening.

Photography at the Clubhouse on Highland

The Clubhouse on Highland photographs beautifully for several reasons worth knowing if you’re planning a wedding there:

The interior light is warm and characterful. The hardwood floors, period lighting, and high ceilings create a quality of light that holds up across an evening reception without needing heavy supplemental lighting.

The staircase is a natural focal point. Multiple photographers have noted the staircase as one of the best portrait locations inside the building. It’s architectural, it’s intimate, and it reads as genuinely historic rather than staged.

The front porch and courtyard extend your options. The covered front porch and outdoor spaces give you portrait locations that feel distinct from the interior, which is useful for creating variety across a full gallery.

The Arts and Crafts architecture is distinctive. Unlike the industrial-chic or barn venues that dominate the Birmingham wedding market, the Clubhouse on Highland reads as genuinely historic and elegant, which means your photos look different from everyone else’s.
