Since their engagement session back in 2015, I’ve been photographing various versions of Colleen & Nick. We’ve traveled through the worlds of Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Wars, and now Phantom of the Opera. Each shoot is such an amazing exercise in creativity. I get to flex a very different set of muscles with these sessions. Plus, hanging out and creating art with these two is always a delight! Working with fellow artists {like Colleen & Nick} is always such a real treat. Creating these Phantom of the Opera anniversary portraits at the Springer Opera House in Columbus, GA was a dream.
The Phantom of the Opera has always been important to Nick – since he was a teenager. So watching him step into this character was special because it was such a long time coming. One of the things that I love most about Colleen & Nick is that they are very good at embodying the characters. It’s not JUST about dressing like them. Colleen & Nick truly bring the characters to life.
Cosplay Anniversary Portraits at the Springer Opera House
I have to also give the Springer Opera House a shout out. They were INCREDIBLE to us. From letting us use the furniture, going on stage, and using the boxes… They were so accommodating to us the entire session and I couldn’t have asked for a better spot for these portraits. As a longtime theatre kid, it was also amazing getting to be up on the stage capturing Colleen & Nick’s portraits. With the help of the theatre, I also got to play with some really dramatic lighting {which is a favorite for me}. It was a different look than I normally go for. But it felt right for Colleen & Nick as the Phantom and Christine. While we worked our own elements into the portraits, it was also important to Colleen & Nick to recreate a few moments from the show/movie. Phantom of the Opera is very much larger than life – and I hope that I captured a little of that magic in Colleen & Nick’s anniversary portraits.
We’re already talking about our next sessions together including Harry Potter and maybe Mad Max: Fury Road. Whatever it is, I know that Colleen & Nick will absolutely nail it and we’ll have a magical time, as always!
