A Fernbank Museum proposal was already on my list of things I wanted to document. What I didn’t expect was to photograph two proposals in the same session.
Teddi and Ivey had planned a double proposal: both were going to propose, both were going to be a surprise, and neither knew exactly when or how the other was going to do it. As a concept, it’s one of the most joyful things I can imagine documenting. In practice, it delivered everything I hoped for and then some.

The Day
Fernbank has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid growing up in Atlanta. Walking back into it with a couple always feels like returning somewhere familiar while also seeing it fresh through their eyes.
We started by keeping things easy and unhurried, wandering the outdoor spaces at the back of the museum among the sculptures and alcoves. The goal was simple: let some of the nervous energy settle before the main event. Both Teddi and Ivey were carrying the knowledge of what was coming, and that tension needed somewhere to go before it could become joy.
Ivey proposed first, with a song written specifically for Teddi and the occasion. Teddi proposed second, essentially in verse. The fact that they’d kept their plans entirely separate from each other, not knowing what the other had prepared, meant the whole thing unfolded with genuine surprise and genuine awe on both sides. Even when you know the answer is yes, there’s still a rush of adrenaline when the moment actually arrives. I got to witness that twice.
Both proposals happened in the outdoor alcoves at the back of the museum, which gave them real privacy for two of the most personal moments of their lives. After, we moved inside to explore. The star gallery room. The spiral staircase. The kind of spaces that make Fernbank feel unlike anywhere else in Atlanta.

Why Fernbank Is an Exceptional Proposal Location
Fernbank Museum of Natural History sits in the historic Druid Hills neighborhood, surrounded by 65 acres of preserved forest. It’s accessible, distinctive, and offers a range of spaces that work beautifully for proposals depending on what kind of moment you’re after.
The outdoor sculpture garden and alcoves. This is where Teddi and Ivey’s proposals happened, and it’s one of my favorite spots in the entire museum. The alcoves provide natural privacy in an outdoor setting, with enough architectural interest to make the photographs feel considered without being staged. It’s quiet, it’s green, and it gives a proposal the space it deserves.
The Star Gallery. A fiber-optic ceiling that simulates a night sky, dramatic lighting, and an intimate scale that makes it feel like the rest of the world has disappeared. For couples who want something atmospheric and moody, this room is extraordinary.
The spiral staircase. One of Fernbank’s most iconic interior features and a genuinely beautiful portrait location. The architecture does the visual work; you just have to show up.
The Great Hall. Soaring glass ceilings, 86 feet overhead, with the world’s largest dinosaurs below. It’s dramatic in the best possible way and available for private events after 6pm.
The Terrace and Dinosaur Plaza. Outdoor spaces with views into the forest, the bronze dinosaur fountain, and the kind of lush greenery that photographs beautifully in any season.

Planning a Fernbank Museum Proposal
A few things worth knowing if you’re considering Fernbank for a proposal:
The museum is open to the public until 5pm. For a private proposal experience in the indoor spaces, plan to either arrive earlier and use the outdoor areas, or time it for the evening hours. The outdoor gardens and sculpture areas are accessible earlier in the day and offer more privacy than the busy interior during peak hours.
The outdoor alcoves at the back are ideal for privacy. If you want a moment that feels genuinely intimate rather than performed in front of museum visitors, head to the back. The sculpture garden and alcoves are quieter and give you space to breathe.
Coordinate with a photographer in advance. The logistics of a proposal — especially something as choreographed as a double proposal — require a photographer who knows the location and can stay invisible until the moment arrives. I’ve been coming to Fernbank since childhood and know the space well.
Consider the full experience. Teddi and Ivey’s day didn’t end with the proposals. We spent time wandering, exploring, letting the evening unfold. A proposal session at Fernbank can easily become a two-hour portrait experience if you build in time for it.
