A Flat Rock Park engagement session gives you something genuinely different from a typical Georgia park: shoals, waterfalls, deep forest with sunlight streaming through the trees, and quiet glens that feel like they belong somewhere else entirely. Savannah & James reached out wanting a session that felt like stepping into a fairy realm, and Flat Rock Park in Columbus, near where they live, turned out to be exactly the setting for it.
About Flat Rock Park
Flat Rock Park sits on around 250 acres in Columbus, Georgia, along Warm Springs Road. The park is known for its natural rock formations, a scenic creek, and one of the more popular waterfalls in the area, along with wooded trails, open meadows, and a couple of small ponds. It’s a genuinely varied landscape for one park, with enough different terrain that you can build an entire session without ever leaving.
Photography sessions here fall under the City of Columbus’s park permit system, which issues filming permits for photography shoots within city parks. It’s worth checking with the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department ahead of time to make sure you’re covered, especially for a planned engagement session.

My advice for this venue: the waterfall area is popular, both with photographers and with locals cooling off, so it can get crowded depending on the time of day and season. Shaded areas throughout the park make it a strong option for late morning or afternoon sessions if you want to avoid the harshest sun and the biggest crowds at the falls.

Why Flat Rock Park Works for a Themed Session
Flat Rock Park’s mix of deep forest, dappled sunlight, and open glens makes it a strong fit for a session with a specific creative vision, not just a standard outdoor shoot. For Savannah & James, that vision was a full fantasy theme, and the park’s natural variety gave us room to shift moods within a single session instead of needing multiple locations.

Photography Opportunities at Flat Rock Park
The wooded areas with sunlight breaking through the canopy are some of the most striking spots in the park, especially for a dreamy, fantasy-leaning aesthetic. The shoals and waterfall add a dramatic, moving backdrop if you want something a little wilder, while the open glens and meadows give you softer, quieter light for a different mood entirely. Because the terrain shifts so much throughout the park, you can build real visual variety into one session without much travel between spots.

A Real Life Flat Rock Park Engagement Session: Savannah & James
Savannah & James’s Flat Rock Park engagement session came together as something closer to a full creative concept than a typical shoot. The date ended up landing on Halloween, and once Savannah showed me the dress she’d chosen, the whole thing clicked into place. I asked how they’d feel about bringing smoke bombs into the mix, and they were completely on board.
We split the session into two distinct halves. The first leaned fully into a fantasy feel, working through the woods and pools of sunlight in Savannah’s first outfit. For the second, we found open shade elsewhere in the park and brought out the smoke bombs, giving the second half of the session a completely different, moodier atmosphere.
This was one of the most fun sessions I’ve had the chance to plan and shoot. Savannah & James, I can’t wait to see everything you two have planned next.
