A Georgia Aquarium engagement session gives you something genuinely different from a typical outdoor shoot: glowing tank light, playful marine life, and a setting that feels like an adventure instead of a pose-and-smile routine. I got to photograph Caroline & Conor’s session here, which started at their home and ended among sharks, otters, and penguins, and it’s stuck with me as one of the most fun sessions I’ve shot.

About a Georgia Aquarium Engagement Session
The Georgia Aquarium is one of Atlanta’s most visited attractions, home to beluga whales, otters, penguins, and a shark exhibit, among dozens of other displays. Personal photography is allowed throughout most of the aquarium, but there are a few real rules worth knowing. Flash, tripods, and professional-grade equipment aren’t permitted without prior approval, and any professional or commercial photo session, including engagement sessions, technically requires submitting a filming and photography application through the aquarium in advance. Approval can take a few business days, and sessions aren’t accommodated during peak attendance times like weekends, holidays, or spring and summer break.

My advice for this venue: plan for crowds, even on a weekday. The Georgia Aquarium is genuinely one of the busiest spots in the city, so finding quiet, uncluttered backgrounds takes some patience and creativity. It’s part of why I like pairing an aquarium session with something calmer beforehand, like time at home, so the day has some breathing room built in before diving into a busier environment.

Planning Your Session Around the Aquarium
A Georgia Aquarium engagement session works especially well when it’s part of a bigger day rather than the whole session. Caroline & Conor started at home, making drinks, hanging out with their cats, and playing Mario Kart on their couch, before heading to the aquarium for round two. That combination gave their photos a nice range: relaxed and personal at home, then a little more adventurous and playful once we got to the exhibits.
Photography Opportunities at the Georgia Aquarium
The aquarium’s tunnels and tank displays create some genuinely beautiful, moody lighting that you can’t recreate anywhere else. Backlit tanks, glowing jellyfish displays, and the deep blues of the shark exhibit all make for striking portrait backdrops. Because the space gets crowded, finding pockets of privacy takes some searching, tucked corners of tunnels, quieter exhibit rooms, moments between crowds, but that challenge is part of what makes the resulting photos feel more genuine and less staged.

A Real Life Georgia Aquarium Engagement Session: Caroline & Conor
Caroline & Conor’s Georgia Aquarium engagement session started long before we ever got to the fish. I arrived at their home to find them making drinks together and hanging out with their cats, Kimchi and Sushi, who spent the afternoon chasing moths and playing in the blinds before deciding they were over being photographed. Caroline & Conor grabbed a couple of beers, we sat outside enjoying the weather, and eventually ended up on the couch for a round of Mario Kart, one of their favorite ways to spend time together.
From there, we headed to the Georgia Aquarium, one of their favorite places to visit as a couple. It happened to be a surprisingly busy day, so we spent some time working around the crowds to find quieter pockets of light in the tunnels and exhibit rooms. Caroline & Conor showed me their favorite spots, the otters, the beluga, the penguins, and we all fell hard for the newer shark exhibit along the way.
My goal for their session was never to make it feel like a session at all, just a genuine slice of a day they already loved living. Between the cats, the video games, and their favorite aquarium exhibits, that’s exactly what we got. I can’t wait for their wedding in North Carolina next year.
