Sarah and Tristan got ready separately at a hotel just down the street, surrounded by some of their favorite people. When it was time, they walked to the courthouse, and Sarah crossed the colorful Decatur Square crosswalks to meet Tristan out front for their first look and private vows. They lingered there for a while, laughing and settling into the day, before heading inside to explore the ceremony and reception spaces and take photos. There was a lot of joy woven throughout the day—especially the easy, playful teasing between Tristan and his sister and the clear closeness of his entire family.

Their reception felt deeply communal, from the Pittsburgh cookie table filled with homemade and meaningful recipes alongside a traditional cake, to the energy on the dance floor. The hora was a highlight, with Sarah and Tristan lifted into the air amid cheers, laughter, and a sea of expressive faces. They wanted to be present for their entire cocktail hour, which made space for relaxed, reunion-style family photos and unhurried connection. With their love of vintage style and throwback details—echoing the Mad Men–inspired feel of their engagement session—the classic marble, high ceilings, and timeless architecture of the courthouse suited them perfectly.

As a documentary photographer, I’m all about capturing the real stuff—quiet glances, nervous laughter, and the unscripted in-betweens that actually feel like you. That’s why a Historic DeKalb Courthouse wedding works so well for the way I photograph. The space brings its own presence and structure, which means nothing has to be forced. You get to stay present and connected, and I get to quietly document what unfolds.
Historic DeKalb Courthouse Wedding in Decatur, Georgia
A Historic DeKalb Courthouse wedding has a rhythm that feels grounded and straightforward. You’re right on Decatur Square, surrounded by everyday life, but once you step inside the courthouse, the outside noise fades. The scale of the building, the marble interiors, and the natural light create a calm setting that lets the moment speak for itself.

About the Historic DeKalb Courthouse
The Historic DeKalb Courthouse was built in 1918 and now houses the DeKalb History Center. Located directly on Decatur Square, the courthouse features marble walls, terrazzo floors, and tall arched windows that allow natural light to fill the interior.

Most Historic DeKalb Courthouse weddings take place in the Old Superior Courtroom, which is used for both ceremonies and receptions. An adjacent lobby space is commonly used for cocktail hour, with an additional room available for catering. The layout is simple and contained, which keeps the day moving smoothly without a lot of transitions.

Because of its central location, the courthouse is within walking distance of multiple hotels, restaurants, murals, and outdoor spaces around downtown Decatur.
Ceremony & Reception at a Historic DeKalb Courthouse Wedding

A Historic DeKalb Courthouse wedding is an indoor-only experience. The Old Superior Courtroom works especially well for intimate to mid-sized weddings and photographs beautifully throughout the day.
Natural light is one of the strongest features of the space. Earlier ceremonies during daylight hours allow the most light into the courtroom, creating a bright and open feel. Later ceremonies, including evening events, still work well if you’re drawn to a softer or more candlelit atmosphere. The key is understanding how the light changes in the space so expectations stay aligned.

Cocktail hour typically takes place just downstairs from the main courtroom, keeping guests close and minimizing movement between spaces.
My Advice for a Historic DeKalb Courthouse Wedding
Getting ready off-site is strongly recommended. The courthouse only offers small holding rooms rather than full getting-ready spaces. Most couples choose a nearby hotel and walk to the courthouse, which keeps the day calmer and avoids feeling cramped or rushed.

Because the courthouse sits on Decatur Square, outdoor moments such as arrivals, exits, and portraits take place in a public setting. Indoors, noise is rarely an issue, but outside there may be people walking through the area. That public energy is part of the setting and worth keeping in mind when imagining how the day will feel.
Decatur Square is an active area, and there are periods when construction or revitalization projects are underway. This can mean temporary barriers or detours around the square. It’s manageable, but flexibility is important.

Parking is generally easy, with multiple parking garages and street parking options nearby. Guests should expect a short walk to the courthouse.
Photography Around Decatur Square

One of the biggest advantages of a Historic DeKalb Courthouse wedding is how many photo options are available within a short walk. Decatur Square offers murals, sidewalks, storefronts, and small green spaces that work well for relaxed couple portraits without needing transportation.

There is also a small green space directly in front of the courthouse that adds a natural option close to the building. Because these are public areas, other people may be present, which contributes to a lived-in, documentary feel.
Inside the courthouse, the architecture does much of the work. The symmetry, scale, and light support candid moments without the need for posing or staging.

Food, Flow & Evening Options
The courthouse’s street-level location makes late-night food options easy. Food trucks can pull up directly out front, and I’ve photographed Historic DeKalb Courthouse weddings that opted for casual late-night food instead of a traditional cake. Because everything is walkable, guests move naturally through the evening without feeling directed.

Is a Historic DeKalb Courthouse Wedding Right for You?
A Historic DeKalb Courthouse wedding is a strong fit for couples who want something simple, meaningful, and rooted in a real place. It works especially well for people who value ease, walkability, and a wedding day that doesn’t feel like a production.

If you’re considering a Historic DeKalb Courthouse wedding and want a photographer who understands how the space photographs, how the light behaves inside the building, and how to document the day without interrupting it, reach out!
