Elyssa said it best when she & Nate first reached out: that they were about to have a baby…but that they’re also about to get married. And they wanted their marriage to have its own moment – to breathe before everything changes. I remember thinking how lovely that was and I couldn’t wait to help them plan a celebration that was everything they wanted to mark this special time together.

Want a day shaped around the two of you? Here’s what Georgia elopement photography includes.

Elopement in Decatur GA

To start the day, I met Elyssa & Nate at home just after breakfast, with one very helpful pup supervising the getting ready. I loved that Elyssa & Nate chose to prepare together, helping the other with their outfits for the day. From there, we headed to the DeKalb courthouse for their marriage license and a sweet little hallway ceremony (shoutout to The Modern Officiant for always making it personal and perfect). A quick note if you’re thinking about an elopement at the courthouse: I’m not really allowed in the space when you get the actual license, so consider planning a little moment somewhere else for your vows or to recreate the ceremony, like Elyssa & Nate did.You deserve to have this special moment take up space and time, I promise.

Elopement Photos in Decatur Square

I’ve photographed several elopements and weddings in Decatur Square – so I love seeing what couples decide to do during their celebration. For Elyssa & Nate, they chose donuts from Hell Yeah Gluten Free stood in for cake {and honestly? 10/10}. We ended the day wandering Woodlands Garden, and letting it all soak in. Letting them just be married for a second. Woodlands Garden is one of my favorite places, it’s just so beautiful. Elyssa & Nate found a quiet corner to exchange more private vows. It was sweet, lovely, and perfectly them.

Not everything has to be big to be meaningful. Sometimes the quiet, simple days are the ones that linger longest. Congratulations again, Elyssa & Nate.

Officiant: The Modern Officiant

As a documentary photographer, I’m here for the real stuff—the quiet morning coffees, the shared glances in between errands, the way your hand finds theirs without thinking. That’s what makes eloping in Decatur such a beautiful fit for the way I work. From courthouse steps to garden paths and donut shop sidewalks, this city doesn’t ask for perfection—it invites presence. You get to move at your own pace, be fully in the moment, and just enjoy being together. I’ll be there, quietly capturing the story as it naturally unfolds.

My advice for eloping in Decatur:

  • You can get ready together or still keep some things secret and have a first look moment, just like any other wedding day.
  • Think of your ideal day and build from there. Having a slow coffee together? Sleeping in late? Spending the first hour reading together on the porch?
  • Though timelines are often much more flexible for elopements, you’ll still want to keep buffer time in your plans for space to breathe.
  • After your ceremony or vow exchange, consider taking some time to record video messages, Facetime, or call loved ones who weren’t here for the day.
  • Eloping in Decatur means you have tons of options at your fingertips: brewery crawls, spa treatments, nature walks, or private chef dinners.

So, you’re thinking about eloping in Decatur? Excellent choice. Nestled just east of Atlanta, Decatur is one of those rare spots that feels both cozy and cosmopolitan—full of charm, history, and really good food. Whether you want your day to be sweet and simple or full of intentional moments and local flavor, Decatur has everything you need for an unforgettable elopement.

About Decatur, GA

Decatur is a city that knows how to slow down without feeling sleepy. With a walkable downtown, historic architecture, hidden gardens, and some of the best bites in the state, it’s a perfect place to say “I do” without the pressure of a full-blown production. It’s especially great for couples who want to keep things meaningful, relaxed, and a little bit off the beaten path.

If you’re eloping here, you’ll get your marriage license at the DeKalb County Probate Court, located right in downtown Decatur. There’s no waiting period and the license never expires, so you can pick it up the day of or in advance. Just don’t forget to make an appointment—DeKalb requires one! Both of you need to be there in person, with valid IDs (and divorce or death certificates if you’ve been married before).

Once you’ve got the license, it’s go time.

Photography Opportunities in Decatur

You don’t have to leave the city limits to find gorgeous spots for elopement photos. From the marble steps and stately columns of the Historic DeKalb Courthouse to the shaded walking paths at Woodlands Garden, Decatur is full of backdrops that feel both timeless and personal.

This couple, Elyssa and Nate, made their day completely their own: they got ready together in their home with their dogs, then picked up their marriage license in the morning before heading to meet their officiant at the courthouse. After their ceremony on the steps, they stopped by Hell Yeah Gluten Free to grab celebratory donuts and had a little cake moment right there on the sidewalk—just them, their sweets, and a whole lot of joy. We wrapped up the day with a photo stroll through Woodlands Garden, where they wandered through sun-dappled trails and soaked up their first few hours as a married couple.

Want to do it your way too? Here are some other Decatur gems that make great photo stops or celebration spots:

  • The Historic Square – cobblestone corners, public art, and cute little nooks for portraits.
  • Oakhurst Park – wide open green space with an easygoing vibe.
  • Reynoldstown BeltLine Connection – just a short drive away and perfect for mural-lovers.
  • Eddie’s Attic alleyway – moody, urban, and iconic in its own way.
  • Oakhurst Community Garden – a low-key urban garden space that feels like a secret pocket of peace right in the city.

Make the Day Your Own

One of the best things about eloping in Decatur is the flexibility. You can turn your elopement into a full-day adventure—or keep it sweet and simple.

Here are a few ways to make the most of your day:

  • Start slow with coffee and pastries from Butter & Cream or Dancing Goats.
  • Pick up your license at the courthouse, then take a short walk around the square.
  • Exchange vows on the courthouse steps, at a nearby park, or tucked into the gardens at Woodlands.
  • Celebrate with food—think a long brunch at The White Bull, tacos at Taqueria del Sol, or picnic-style with goodies from the Dekalb Farmers Market.
  • End the day your way: head to Three Taverns Brewery for a celebratory pint, book a staycation at a local boutique hotel like The Kimpton, or treat yourselves to a private chef dinner back at your Airbnb.

You don’t need a big production to have a full, rich, joyful wedding day. You just need each other—and maybe a donut.

Anywhere that feels like a celebration. A decadent dessert run, a brewery hop, or just a peaceful nature walk—Decatur’s got options for every kind of vibe.

Do we have to live in Georgia to elope here?
