A North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences wedding puts you somewhere you genuinely can’t recreate anywhere else: surrounded by dinosaur skeletons, live butterflies, and a two-story waterfall, right in the middle of downtown Raleigh. I got to photograph Chloe & Kevin’s reception here, part two of their wedding celebration after an intimate ceremony in Wilmington, and it remains one of the most memorable spaces I’ve shot in.

About the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
As the largest natural history museum in the Southeast, the museum offers a genuinely unique backdrop for a wedding reception. Depending on which spaces you book, the venue can host anywhere from an intimate gathering up to 2,300 guests. The Mountains to the Sea exhibit is one of the standout options, a two-story diorama complete with a mountain waterfall and native plants. The Special Exhibit Gallery pairs with the second floor for a loftier reception space, and the Acro Cafe sits right against the Living Conservatory, so your guests can dine surrounded by live butterflies and tropical plants.

Rental fees run $500 to $1,800 for a four-hour reception, with an additional hour available for $300. A museum membership is required to book the space, and catering runs exclusively through the museum’s in-house partner.
My advice for this venue: lean into what makes the museum different instead of trying to make it feel like a traditional ballroom. Chloe & Kevin did exactly that, spending time exploring the upper level and watching the butterflies together before their guests even arrived, which made the space feel personal instead of just a backdrop. The exhibits genuinely do the decor work for you here, so you can put your energy into the details that matter most to you instead of over-designing the room.

Reception Spaces at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
Between the Mountains to the Sea waterfall exhibit, the Special Exhibit Gallery, and the butterfly-filled Acro Cafe, you have real flexibility in choosing a reception space that fits your vibe and guest count. Chloe & Kevin’s reception took place among the museum’s exhibits, with their guests dancing near dinosaur displays and enjoying a private, custom cocktail hour before the party got going.

Photography Opportunities at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
The exhibits themselves make for some of the most distinctive wedding photos I’ve taken, dinosaur skeletons, dramatic lighting, and architectural details that shift completely from floor to floor. The escalators and open gallery spaces add unexpected, fun moments for candids, and the Living Conservatory’s butterflies give you a softer, more intimate setting if you want a break from the bigger exhibit halls. Because the museum offers so much visual variety in one building, a reception here gives you a wide range of backdrops without ever needing to step outside.

A Real Life North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences Wedding: Chloe & Kevin
Chloe & Kevin’s North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences wedding was the second half of their celebration, following an intimate ceremony in Wilmington. For their reception, they got ready with close friends and family at the Sheraton Raleigh, choosing to wear the same outfits from their Wilmington wedding, a small, meaningful way to keep things sustainable and full circle.
Before heading to the museum, we stopped at one of their favorite nearby parks for portraits. Storm clouds rolled in and stuck around, but the moody sky ended up giving their photos an atmosphere I loved. Through a morning that didn’t go quite as planned, Chloe & Kevin stayed easygoing and flexible, leaning on their planner to keep everything moving.
Once we arrived at the museum, Chloe & Kevin took time for themselves before the party started, watching the butterflies in the Living Conservatory and exploring the upper level together. That intentional pause before their guests arrived for cocktail hour set the tone for the whole evening. Their reception was full of personal touches: custom mocktails made just for them, poems from the Poetry Fox, private access to select exhibits, and a dance floor that didn’t quit until their private last dance closed out the night.
Chloe & Kevin, thank you for having me at both of your celebrations. Watching you build a wedding day that felt entirely like you, twice, was something I won’t forget.
