An Oakland Cemetery engagement session gets you something you won’t find anywhere else in Atlanta: Victorian architecture, sprawling gardens, and a genuinely gothic atmosphere, all thirty minutes from downtown. I’ve photographed several sessions here, and it remains one of my favorite spots in the city to work. If you’re considering it for your own engagement photos, here’s what you need to know, plus a real look at how one couple made it their own.

About Oakland Cemetery

Oakland Cemetery spans 48 acres in the heart of Atlanta, filled with historic architecture, sculptures, and lush Victorian gardens, with skyline views layered in throughout. It’s Atlanta’s oldest public park, and its mix of towering oaks, ornate stonework, and rolling hills gives it a completely different visual identity than any other engagement location in the city.

Photography sessions here require a permit through the cemetery’s private events office. Fees start at $500 for a 1.5-hour session with up to 10 people, and indoor shoots require a security escort. Photographers are limited to handheld cameras only, no tripods or additional lighting equipment, and everyone in the session needs to stay in publicly accessible areas throughout.

My advice for this venue: book your permit well in advance, since it needs to go through the cemetery’s private events office rather than being something you can arrange last minute. Golden hour here is genuinely stunning, the light moves beautifully through the trees and across the stonework, so if you can time your session for sunset, it’s worth the effort of coordinating the permit around that window.

Photography Opportunities at Oakland Cemetery

The stonework and mausoleums throughout Oakland Cemetery are some of my favorite architectural details to photograph anywhere in Atlanta. Every path leads somewhere visually different, from open garden space to narrow, ivy-covered walkways between historic monuments. Sunset light filtering through the cemetery’s old growth trees adds a soft, warm quality that pairs beautifully with the more dramatic architecture. Because photographers here are limited to handheld cameras with no additional equipment, sessions tend to stay relaxed and mobile, walking and exploring rather than setting up elaborate shots, which usually makes for more natural, in-the-moment photos anyway.

A Real Life Oakland Cemetery Engagement Session: Hannah & Chris

Hannah & Chris got engaged at a Renaissance Faire, so when we started planning their Oakland Cemetery engagement session, leaning into fantasy and fairy tale energy felt like the obvious choice. That world has been such a big part of their relationship, and Oakland Cemetery’s architecture gave us the perfect backdrop to bring it to life.

We met right around sunset, which is when this venue is at its most beautiful. Hannah wore a flowing, elegant purple dress, and both of their outfits gave a subtle nod to their love of dressing up for the faire. From there, we wandered the cemetery together, working our way through the stonework and mausoleums to find the spots that felt right for their story.

As someone who loves the Ren Faire scene myself, getting to talk with Hannah & Chris throughout the session was such a fun, easy afternoon. Their connection came through in every shot, and I can’t wait to see how they carry that same energy into their wedding day.
