Emma and Jose came to their Plaza Theatre wedding knowing exactly who they were. Both self-described movie buffs with a deep love for old Hollywood, they leaned hard into what makes this place special — a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 moment in front of the “Feature Presentation” display, 3-D glasses for the whole wedding party, a first look that was quiet and just for them, and a cake cutting at the concession stand that somehow felt like the most perfectly them moment of the entire day. Their ceremony unfolded on stage while their guests watched from the famous red seats — and their videographer live-streamed it all on the screen behind them. I’d never seen that before and I absolutely loved it. It was one of those days that reminded me why I do this work. (If you want another look at this venue in action, check out Amy & Rhys’ intimate Plaza Theatre wedding too.)

As a documentary photographer, I’m all about capturing the real stuff — quiet glances, joyful chaos, the unscripted in-betweens that actually feel like you. That’s why a Plaza Theatre wedding is such a perfect match for my approach. This historic art deco cinema on Ponce de Leon Avenue is layered with personality — neon marquee out front, a grand central lobby, bold décor that rewards people who actually look around. It’s a venue that gives couples permission to be completely, unapologetically themselves — and that kind of energy makes for extraordinary photographs. It’s the kind of place where you can stop trying to have a wedding and just have your day, while I quietly document the magic.

My Advice for This Venue

Light inside is moody and dim. I’ve shot here multiple times and I come prepared for low-light — that’s part of what makes these photos feel cinematic. Just know that if you’re hiring a photographer for this venue, experience with indoor, available-light shooting matters a lot.

Use the whole building. The Plaza has three distinct screening spaces — the large main theatre downstairs and two smaller, moodier upstairs theatres (formerly the balcony). Getting ready in separate upstairs rooms, as some couples do, means everything happens under one roof and the spaces themselves become part of your story.

Put your names on the marquee. This is non-negotiable. The iconic neon marquee on Ponce is one of the great photo moments in all of Atlanta — it’s personal, it’s cinematic, and it photographs brilliantly at dusk. Don’t skip it.

Lean into the theme or don’t — just commit. The couples who have the most fun here are the ones who embrace what this place actually is. 3-D glasses, a photo booth, movie-themed table décor, a “Feature Presentation” sign — these aren’t corny touches, they’re you in a building that was built for this. Trust it.

Think about your ceremony setup carefully. Getting married on stage with your guests in the theatre seats is genuinely unlike anything else in Atlanta. Consider how you want the aisle, where your officiant stands, and whether you want anything displayed on the screen — a video, a live stream, photos. The production capabilities here are real.

The lobby is your reception playground. The long central hallway and lobby spaces work beautifully for a cocktail-style mingling reception. More intimate, more flexible, and honestly more fun for guests than a traditional seated dinner.

Plan Your Dream Plaza Theatre Wedding in Atlanta

If you’re an Atlanta couple looking for a wedding venue that actually reflects your personality — and you’ve ever stayed up too late watching a film you love — the Plaza Theatre deserves a serious look. This isn’t a generic ballroom or a garden estate. It’s an Atlanta landmark with nearly 90 years of history, a distinct art deco soul, and the kind of character that most wedding venues spend a lot of money trying to fake. For the right couple, there is simply nowhere better.

You can reach the Plaza Theatre at 1049 Ponce de Leon Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30306, by phone at (678) 796-6394, or through their website at plazaatlanta.com.

About the Plaza Theatre

The Plaza Theatre sits at 1049 Ponce de Leon Avenue NE, right in the heart of Atlanta’s Poncey-Highland neighborhood, surrounded by Virginia-Highland and Druid Hills. It opened on December 23, 1939 — designed by Atlanta architect George Harwell Bond as an art deco cinema and live theatre space — and it has been operating continuously ever since, making it Atlanta’s longest-running independent movie theatre.

The building anchors Briarcliff Plaza, which was Atlanta’s first shopping center with off-street parking when it opened. Over the decades the theatre has seen plenty of reinvention, but today it operates as a beloved non-profit cinema under the stewardship of the Atlanta Film Society, specializing in indie films, cult classics, retrospectives, and special screenings. The building has three screens: a grand main auditorium with iconic red seats downstairs, and two smaller, intimate screening rooms upstairs — the original balcony level, converted in 1983.

The exterior marquee, glowing in neon on Ponce, is one of the most recognized signs in Atlanta. Inside, the long central hallway, lobby spaces, concession stand, and bar give the venue a distinct, walkable layout that lends itself naturally to the flow of a wedding day.

Ceremony Locations at the Plaza Theatre

The signature ceremony experience at the Plaza Theatre is getting married on stage — standing in front of the massive screen in the main auditorium while your guests watch from the red theatre seats. It’s theatrical in the best possible way, completely unlike any other ceremony option in Atlanta, and it photographs with a drama and intimacy that’s hard to replicate elsewhere.

Because the guests are seated in fixed theatre rows rather than moveable chairs, the setup has a natural formality to it — everyone has a clear sightline to the stage and there’s a real sense of occasion when you walk that aisle. At the same time, it feels personal and cozy in a way that large traditional venues often don’t.

Couples have used the projection screen creatively — displaying photos, running a video, or even live-streaming the ceremony itself so guests in back rows feel close to the action. The Plaza’s production capabilities are genuine, so it’s worth asking what’s possible for your specific vision.

Reception Options at the Plaza Theatre

The Plaza Theatre works especially well for cocktail-style, mingling receptions — and I’ve seen this approach suit the space beautifully. The lobby and central hallway create a natural flow for guests to move, gather, and find their people, without the rigidity of assigned seating and course service.

The concession stand becomes an unexpectedly charming focal point — it’s been used for cake cuttings, dessert displays, and drink service, and it photographs wonderfully. The Plaza also has a full bar, and the venue’s built-in photo booth backdrop has been a guest favorite at receptions I’ve covered here.

For couples who do want a more seated experience, it’s worth a direct conversation with the venue about what the spaces can accommodate. The smaller upstairs theatres offer additional square footage that can be configured creatively depending on your guest count and vision.

Photography Opportunities at the Plaza Theatre

The Plaza Theatre is genuinely one of my favorite venues to photograph in Atlanta. Here’s what I always make sure to capture:

The marquee. If your names are on the marquee — and they should be — this is the first stop for portraits. The neon lights look best as the sky starts to darken, so keep that in mind when scheduling your portrait time.

The main auditorium. The red seats, the screen, the stage — this room has incredible depth and dimension. Ceremony photos here are dramatic and cinematic without any extra effort. It’s just built that way.

The lobby and hallway. The art deco details throughout the lobby reward a slower, more exploratory shoot. There are paintings, architectural details, and light sources that create beautifully layered images.

The upstairs screening rooms. If you’re getting ready in one of these smaller spaces, they offer intimate, moody light and a totally different texture from the main floor. These rooms have character.

The photo booth. The Plaza’s photo booth backdrop is consistently one of the most-used features of any reception I’ve shot here. Guests love it and the resulting images are always fun to look through afterward.

The surrounding neighborhood. The Virginia-Highland and Poncey-Highland area has great walkable textures — murals, interesting architecture, and street character — that can extend portrait time if you want images beyond the building itself.

FAQs About Plaza Theatre Weddings

Is the Plaza Theatre a dedicated wedding venue? The Plaza Theatre is primarily an operating cinema and event space that hosts private events, including weddings. Because it’s an active theatre, you’ll want to confirm availability and date options directly with the venue well in advance.

What’s the neighborhood like? The Plaza sits on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Poncey-Highland, one of Atlanta’s most walkable and character-rich neighborhoods. It’s close to the BeltLine, Freedom Park, and the restaurants and bars of Virginia-Highland — great context for out-of-town guests.

Is it a good fit for non-traditional couples? Absolutely. This venue is genuinely best suited for couples who want their wedding to feel like them — film lovers, creative types, people who find standard ballroom venues a little lifeless. It draws couples who are comfortable doing things their own way.

What should we ask the venue when we reach out? Ask about availability for your date, what’s included in a private event rental (AV capabilities, bar service, concession access), whether you can put your names on the marquee, what outside vendors are permitted, and whether the upstairs screening rooms are included for getting ready.

What’s the parking situation? The Plaza is part of Briarcliff Plaza, which offers off-street parking — a genuine asset for a Ponce de Leon venue. Street parking is also available nearby.

Do I need a photographer who has shot here before? I’d strongly recommend it. The interior light is low and moody — which is part of what makes these images beautiful — but it requires a photographer who’s comfortable shooting in available light without leaning on flash. Experience in the space also helps with knowing where to be and when. You can see another full Plaza Theatre wedding on this blog — Amy & Rhys — to get a real sense of what’s possible here.
