Sherrice and Steven are the kind of couple who make a photographer’s job feel effortless — not because they’re trying to look good, but because they’re so genuinely themselves that the camera can’t help but find them. They married at Chateau Elan in early December, a choice that made complete sense the moment you understood Sherrice: she loves France, loves elegance, loves the particular kind of beauty that comes from somewhere that takes what it does seriously. The ceremony was held in the art gallery — just Sherrice’s mother and Steven’s siblings gathered close. The reception followed in a private room downstairs, small and intentional. They got ready separately, then came together at the bottom of the grand staircase in the great room, and that moment — the two of them meeting each other in that space — said everything. We moved through the interior, then out to the grounds and vineyards. After the sun went down, we stayed outside for portraits in front of the chateau at night, and these two delivered. Steven spent most of the day finding new ways to make Sherrice laugh, and when I asked them to turn it on, they did. Both of them. Completely.

There are venues that photograph well, and then there are venues that make sense — places where the setting and the couple are actually in conversation with each other. Chateau Elan in winter is both. The vineyards are dormant and spare. The stone exterior of the chateau goes cool and dramatic in low light. Inside, everything is warm and layered — the art on the walls, the woodwork, the staircases. As a documentary photographer, I’m not orchestrating any of that. I’m just paying attention while two people move through a space that fits them, and at a Chateau Elan winter wedding, the space does a lot of the work.

My advice for this venue: Give yourself time to move through the interior before the ceremony — the great room, the staircase, the hallways. These aren’t throwaway spaces; they’re some of the best photography locations on the property. Plan for nighttime portraits if your timeline allows. The chateau exterior at night, lit against the dark, is unlike anything you’ll find at most Georgia venues. And bring someone who makes you laugh.

Plan Your Chateau Elan Winter Wedding

A Chateau Elan wedding in any season is something. But a Chateau Elan winter wedding is its own specific thing — quieter, more dramatic, more intimate in a way that the warmer months, with their rose gardens in full bloom and outdoor receptions on the lawn, don’t quite replicate. If you’ve been drawn to Chateau Elan because of the French countryside aesthetic, the vineyards, the sense of being somewhere that exists on its own terms — winter is when all of that comes through most clearly.

Chateau Elan sits in Braselton, Georgia, about 40 minutes north of Atlanta, and across 3,500 acres of vineyard, lush countryside, and dense pine forest, it offers something most Georgia venues can’t: the feeling of a destination without actually leaving the state.

About Chateau Elan

Chateau Elan began with the planting of vineyards in 1981, and from those vines of Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet, and Riesling grapes grew a destination where French provincial and Southern hospitality combine. The property has expanded considerably since then — it now includes on-site accommodations, a full-service spa, dining, golf, and tennis, making it well-suited for a full wedding weekend rather than just a single day.

What sets it apart architecturally is the chateau itself: a stone building perched on a hillside, surrounded by vineyards and rolling North Georgia forest, designed to feel like it belongs somewhere in the French countryside. In winter, when the vines are bare and the light goes cool and golden in the late afternoon, that impression is strongest.

Ceremony Locations at Chateau Elan

Chateau Elan has a range of ceremony spaces, and the winter months open up options that peak season couples sometimes can’t access.

The Art Gallery is one of the more intimate indoor options on the property — the space where Sherrice and Steven married, with their closest people gathered close around them. It’s a contained, warm room that photographs well and suits small, intentional ceremonies.

The Glasstop Atrium is one of the most sought-after ceremony spaces on the property, with a soaring two-story glass ceiling and cathedral-style architecture that brings in natural light year-round. For couples who want an indoor ceremony that still feels connected to the sky, it’s a strong option in any season.

The Cask Room, tucked beside the winery’s production area, is lined with nearly 200 oak barrels aging Chateau Elan’s signature wines. It holds up to 62 guests and works beautifully for intimate ceremonies or private dinners — particularly in winter, when the warmth of the barrels and the low light give the space a specific coziness that’s hard to manufacture elsewhere.

For couples open to outdoor ceremonies even in cooler weather, the Matisse Terrace, newly reimagined with slate pavers and set against the resort’s Woodlands Wing, is available year-round.

Reception Venues at Chateau Elan

With 50,000 square feet of event space across the property, Chateau Elan can accommodate everything from a ten-person dinner to a grand ballroom reception.

The Debussy Ballroom features soaring ceilings, chandeliers, and a private entrance with an adjoining outdoor veranda — well-suited for couples who want elegance without the scale of the largest spaces.

The Winery Pavilion is the most distinctive reception space on the property — 6,000 square feet with an industrial winery feel, glass garage doors that open onto a vineyard-view patio, and bistro lights overhead. In winter, with the garage doors closed and the lights on, it’s one of the warmest, most atmospheric spaces on the property.

The Paris Ballroom is the largest event space, with over 11,000 square feet, a stage, a dance floor, and a lounge — the right choice if your guest list is large and your reception vision is grand.

For smaller receptions in the spirit of Sherrice and Steven’s day, the venue also offers private dining rooms and intimate spaces that suit a guest list of close family and friends without feeling undersized.

Photography at a Chateau Elan Winter Wedding

The photography opportunities at Chateau Elan in winter are different from what you’ll find at a summer or fall wedding there — and in many ways, more interesting.

The vineyards in December are stripped back and architectural. The rows of dormant vines against the North Georgia hills have a quiet drama that doesn’t exist when everything is in full leaf. The chateau exterior, photographed at dusk or after dark, is one of the more striking backdrops I’ve worked with in Georgia. Inside, the grand staircase, the art gallery, the Cask Room, and the long interior hallways all give a documentary photographer something real to work with — light and shadow, texture, the feeling of a place that has its own character.

Guests can also stroll the property’s Serenity Trail, which winds through the grounds and offers views and photography opportunities throughout.

My approach at a venue like this is the same as anywhere: I’m not staging you in front of the pretty things. I’m following you through the day and paying attention. The setting helps, but the photographs come from you — the way you move together, the things that make you laugh, the quiet moments between the scheduled ones.
