Most blogs about what questions you need to ask your wedding photographer are filled with the same surface-level advice.
Things like:
- Do you carry backup equipment?
- How long have you been photographing weddings?
- When will we receive our photos?
Those questions aren’t bad…but they’re usually already answered somewhere on a photographer’s website.
In a services page.
A wedding photographer FAQ.
Or during your discovery call.
Most important questions to ask a wedding photographer before booking are rarely listed in those places.
Because the answers aren’t logistical.
They’re personal.
They reveal a photographer’s values, perspective, and the way they approach documenting people’s stories.
So this blog isn’t about the obvious questions. It’s about the ones that actually tell you who your photographer is and whether they’re the right person to document your day.
Meet An Atlanta Documentary Wedding Photographer
If you’re new here — hi, I’m Raven.
I’m a wedding photographer based in Atlanta, Georgia (but always down to travel), and I care a lot.
I care about transparency in the wedding industry, especially when it comes to hiring vendors. I’ve been around long enough to hear the horror stories from couples who felt unsupported, unseen, or completely stressed out by the people they hired.

And honestly…I don’t understand why some of those vendors are even in this industry.
Your wedding vendors should care about you as a person—not just the photos, the timeline, or the final gallery.
So this post is my very transparent take on the questions you should ask potential wedding photographers before booking—especially the ones that reveal their approach to people, storytelling, and the experience they create for couples.
If you want to learn more about me and how I approach wedding photography, you can read more about that here.
Quick List: Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking
If you’re short on time, here are the 9 most important questions to ask your wedding photographer before booking:
- Do we share similar values when it comes to weddings and storytelling?
- What is your experience photographing diverse body types and couples?
- How do you approach environmental responsibility while photographing?
- Why did you get into wedding photography?
- How do you help couples feel comfortable in front of the camera?
- What moments matter most to you when documenting a wedding day?
- What does your approach to a wedding day actually look like?
- What makes a wedding meaningful to you?
- What do you want couples to feel when they look back at their photos?

9 Questions to Ask Your Potential Wedding Photographer
Before we dive in, I want to preface something. These questions are centered around values, experiences, and emotions, not just logistics.
Some may resonate with you deeply. Others may not feel relevant at all.
That’s completely okay.
Use these questions as a starting point for understanding the person who may be documenting one of the most special days of your life.

1. Do Similar Values Matter When Booking Your Wedding Photographer?
Short answer: I believe they do.
But there’s nuance here.
For example, if you have no connection to the LGBTQIA+ community, you might not think about representation when hiring a photographer.
But for many queer couples, this is a non-negotiable value.
They want to know:
- Have you photographed LGBTQIA+ weddings?
- Do you actively support and celebrate queer couples?
- Do people like us exist in your portfolio?
As an LGBTQIA+ friendly wedding photographer in Atlanta, this is something I hear about often from couples who are trying to make sure they feel safe and supported on their wedding day.
Representation matters.
And asking about a photographer’s values is one of the best ways to understand whether your wedding photographer will truly support your story.

2. What Is Your Experience Photographing Diverse Body Types?
This one is important.
And honestly…it’s something the wedding industry still struggles with.
Many photographers have photographed a wide variety of body types but don’t always show that representation in their marketing.
Why?
There are a lot of complicated reasons behind that, and quite frankly it’s something that could send me into a full rant.
But here’s the important part: If representation matters to you—ask about it.
Ask to see examples of:
- different body shapes
- different heights
- couples with varied physical dynamics
Your photographer should know how to photograph people in ways that make them feel comfortable, confident, and seen.
Not just pose everyone the same way.
Bonus points if they provide a trauma-informed questionnaire that explores body comfort with posing before the big day!

3. What Steps Do You Take to Protect the Environment While Photographing?
This question often comes up when working with adventure elopement photographers, but honestly, it matters for all wedding photography.
Whether your wedding takes place:
- in a national park
- at a mountain overlook
- at a venue
- or in your backyard
It’s worth asking vendors how they respect the environments they work in.
Things like:
- following Leave No Trace principles
- respecting protected land
- minimizing environmental impact
Your wedding day should be a celebration—not something that harms the spaces you care about.

4. Why Did You Get Into Wedding Photography?
This question might sound simple, but it can reveal a lot.
When you ask a photographer how they got started, you’re really asking: Why do you do this work?
Some photographers enter the industry because it’s profitable, while others enter it because they genuinely care about people, storytelling, and documenting real life.
Neither answer is necessarily wrong—but it can help you understand their intentions and priorities.
If you want to dive deeper into some red flags when hiring vendors, I talk more about that here: Wedding Vendor Red Flags

5. How Do You Help Couples Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera?
Not everyone feels natural being photographed. That’s normal.
A good photographer knows that the best moments happen when people feel relaxed and safe, not when they’re being forced into stiff, awkward positions that they’ve never been in before.
Ask potential wedding photographers how they help couples feel comfortable.
Do they:
- guide gently instead of over-directing?
- encourage movement and interaction?
- focus on documenting moments as they happen?
The answer to this question tells you a lot about their photography style and approach.

6. What Moments Matter Most to You When Photographing a Wedding?
This question reveals something important: what your photographer notices throughout the day—specifically the moments not listed on a timeline schedule.
Some photographers focus heavily on:
- details
- styling
- curated portraits
Others prioritize:
- emotional moments
- connection
- the relationships between people
Neither is wrong—but it’s important to know which approach aligns with what matters most to you.

7. What Does Your Approach to a Wedding Day Look Like?
Every photographer moves through a wedding day differently. Some operate like directors—constantly posing and guiding while others approach weddings more like documentary storytellers (that’s me!).
Ask your photographer:
- how they interact with guests
- how much posing they typically do
- how they balance structure with candid moments
Understanding their approach helps you imagine what your day will actually feel like. If you’re also trying to determine how much coverage you might need, this guide can help.

8. What Do You Believe Makes a Wedding Meaningful?
This might be the most revealing question on this list because it shows you what your photographer values.
Some might talk about aesthetics. Others might talk about emotion.
For me personally, meaningful weddings are about:
- connection
- presence
- the people who show up to celebrate with you
Not perfection or what your Pinterest board looks like.

9. What Do You Want Couples to Feel When They Look Back at Their Photos?
This question brings everything full circle because wedding photography isn’t just about images, It’s about memory.
When couples look back at their photos years from now, the goal isn’t just to see what the day looked like. It’s to remember what it felt like.
- The laughter.
- The quiet moments.
- The people who surrounded you.
That’s what meaningful photography preserves.

The Right Photographer Is About More Than Skill
At the end of the day, asking the right questions before booking a wedding photographer isn’t just about verifying experience.
It’s about understanding:
- their values
- their intentions
- their perspective on weddings
Because the person documenting your wedding day is more than just a vendor, they’re someone who will witness some of the most emotional and meaningful moments of your life.
You deserve someone who genuinely cares about telling that story.
