Wilmington NC Tiny Wedding // Chloe & Kevin

Chloe & Kevin’s tiny wedding day in Wilmington NC was a day I had been looking forward to for a long time. From the beginning of the planning process, it was clear that this couple was going to embrace what they wanted from their wedding day. Wilmington NC is a place that holds a lot of meaning for Chloe & Kevin so it was a no-brainer to host part one of their “tiny wedding” {as they dubbed the day} there. Chloe & Kevin’s tiny wedding consisted of an elopement and then a nice dinner with family.

Getting Ready

Chloe chose to prepare with her maid of honor and mom the day of their elopement. We were all a little anxious about the weather, but it cleared up just in time for their celebration. I’d had a blast watching it from where I was staying in town – seriously so cool to watch the clouds and the barges nearby. The house that Chloe rented to prep in was stunning – it had so many cool little alcoves, beautiful windows, and lots of gorgeous light {my dream!}. After a last minute sewing party to fix something – a huge shout out to Chloe’s mom! – we captured some of her getting ready moments. We even re-created a photo from her mom’s wedding day, which is so special to me.

If you could do it all over, would you change anything?

Literally nothing. It was such a perfect day. I would have googled how to put on a veil though.

First Look in Wilmington NC

Once Chloe & Kevin were ready, they met for a first look in the side garden of this house. There was a beautiful brick wall and fountain – and we could see the water from where we were! It was perfect. Chloe’s whole look was really ethereal and very like almost like a celestial princess. Her veil even had moon, stars, and sparkle details, which I was able to capture as the wind flipped her veil around. I personally love the windy look in photos, there’s something about capturing movement like that! Not to be outdone, Kevin had some really slick orange shoes to go with this custom suit and jacket lining {with his name embroidered inside!}.

What did you love about your venue/wedding location?

How small and intimate it was! Despite being in the middle of downtown Wilmington it was such an oasis with the plants and bushes and brick walls surrounding the property. Being able to decorate the inside of the home was so nice too.

Wilmington NC Wedding Portraits

Chloe & Kevin are really playful people so we made sure to have lots of fun on their wedding day too. After their windy portraits outside, we had a mini tea party inside the rental house. It was so fun! Honestly, most of their portraits were really about following where the mood took us.

Any tips for future couples on how to prepare for their wedding photos?

Do cute shit together in front of the camera. And chill – a good photographer will walk you through the rest 😉

Backyard Wedding Ceremony in Wilmington NC

I’m telling you: this house was a dream! Chloe & Kevin tied the knot in an outdoor ceremony in the backyard for some privacy. They had a gorgeous arbor draped in burnt orange fabric with lots of gold, crimson, and other rust details. It was beautiful – I LIVE for fall colors like this on wedding days! Chloe’s maid of honor officiated with their dogs in attendance, too. Since they had a small gathering, Chloe & Kevin chose to have their rings warmed by every guest there. I love that tradition.

What advice would you give to other couples planning their wedding?

Make lots of checklists, and refer to them often. And DELEGATE! Your friends and family want to help you. Put them to work.

One of the most special parts of Chloe & Kevin’s wedding day was meeting Chloe’s dad. Chloe’s dad is also a photographer. It had been mentioned to me that he wanted to take some photographs of his daughter on her wedding day, and I was more than happy to oblige. We’ve got a couple of different moments during the day. I’m more than happy to step back and really capture that as a moment because I think that’s really special for everyone there. Moments like those are special to me – because they’re something I want you to have to look back on later on.

Riverwalk Photo Walk

After Chloe & Kevin’s ceremony, we took a photo walk around Wilmington. It was a great chance for Chloe & Kevin to have some peace and quiet, and to just enjoy the city that’s so special to them. Along the Riverwalk, we found the Museum of the Bizarre. Like any wedding day or portrait session, I looked for moments that were full of fun lights or colors. But, the Museum of the Bizarre was kind of an oddball location – we had no idea what to expect! We found a mirror maze, wax figurines from horror movies, and just a great time. Chloe & Kevin are so patient and trusting – and because of that we made some really hilarious and special memories together.

Most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Many moments! Definitely our first look and the ceremony! Looking into each others eyes and smiling faces during the ceremony. The wind blowing us around outside during our first look. The speeches during dinner. The mirror maze at the museum of the bizarre!

Wilmington NC Wedding Reception

For their wedding reception, Chloe & Kevin hired a local private chef to make a multi-course meal for them. The night was filled with speeches from their loved ones, a delicious meal, and just a wonderful evening together.

What were you most anxious or nervous about regarding your wedding day and how did it turn out?

I was afraid of all the little details being forgotten or things happening that we weren’t prepared for! And for the most part, nothing happened that our family wasn’t able to help us out with. Except our driver dropping the keys to our rental car in the Marina, lol!

Congratulations again, Chloe & Kevin! I’m so happy for you. I loved how every moment of your wedding day truly felt like you. This spring, I’ll get to see Chloe & Kevin agin for a bigger wedding reception and I know it’s going to be so much fun!
