Unicoi State Park Adventure Wedding // Jess & Cory
Meet the Couple
State Parks, landscapes with mountains, and adventure sessions in the middle of a wedding are all some of my absolute favorite things. So when the opportunity came to associate shoot for my dear friend Krista Turner at Unicoi State Park for Jess & Cory’s wedding, I was thrilled at the prospect. Jess & Cory are an adventurous pair: exploring, hiking, and camping their way across the world. So, we bonded immediately over our love of exploration out in nature. Their love of the outdoors and their respect for state parks always came through as we worked together. And, they were a delight to photograph on their wedding day.
Being someone after my Type-A heart, Jess built and organized an interactive map of the state park and some spots she was really in love with or that were important to the two of them for photos. This was SUCH an incredible help. Plus, I even got to scout the location a few weeks before to check out the drive between spots. It gave me the chance to get an idea of how we wanted to organize their adventure session. If you’re planning on having a section of your wedding day where you hop to multiple locations with your wedding photographer, their being able to make a visual and mental and driving plan between those spots can be crucial! It absolutely helped me maximize the time we had together. Not to mention, giving the couple little breaks between photos. PLUS it meant getting so many different types of backdrops: forest, mountains, lakes, rivers, and all on the same day.
Unicoi State Park Adventure Wedding Day
Unicoi State Park is specifically so important to this couple. Not only did it serve as the background for so many important relationship moments, but Cory’s grandfather even has a bench dedicated to him along one of the trails as a thank you for all his contributions for caring for the park.
Jess got dressed and made-up in the Unicoi State Park Lodge on the top floor. There were huge windows that not only let in some of the most amazing light, but also gave a wonderful view of the state park itself. Her mom was there to help with things like zipping the dress and putting on Jess’s shoes. Then Jess sat by the window for a more private moment as she read a letter from Cory… There were so many meaningful moments I was honored to capture.
Both Cory & Jess’s family and wedding party photos were out behind the lodge in this little nook with fantastic views. The greenery was lush and the views of the mountains clear enough to give us the background she and I were both dreaming of. After the ceremony, Jess & Cory and I went off exploring on this mini-adventure session in the middle of their day. From the twisted forest pathways to the rushing riverside, culminating in one of my all-time favorite views, we went all over!
I really loved photographing at the Unicoi State Park and think it’s an amazing wedding venue location. It would also be ideal for an engagement session location, as there were tons of other amazing spots we didn’t even get to visit!
