As a photographer, Cartersville GA holds a special place for me — it’s a city I spent time in during college, and coming back to document Chelsea and Hunter’s proposal and engagement session here felt like returning somewhere familiar with completely new eyes.

What makes downtown Cartersville so good for photography is how much character it packs into a walkable area: historic theatres, street murals, locally owned shops, boba tea. It’s a city with genuine personality, and Chelsea and Hunter fit right into it.

The Proposal

Hunter and I had been planning this for a while. The session was framed as a regular engagement session for Chelsea — what she didn’t know was that Hunter had something specific in mind for a very specific moment.

We built in a cue. When Hunter heard it, he dropped to one knee in front of the Grand Theatre, and Chelsea was completely surprised. There were a lot of tears — from both of them, and honestly from me too. That’s the thing about proposals: even when you’ve helped plan every detail, the actual moment still gets you.

The Grand Theatre was the perfect spot for it. Built in 1910 and beautifully restored, it’s been the cultural centerpiece of downtown Cartersville for over a century. The facade has real presence and history behind it, which made for a proposal backdrop that felt significant rather than incidental.

The Rest of the Day

We started at a coffee shop on the square with incredible boba tea — which, after photographing another session there, I’ve become a little obsessed with. It was a relaxed, easy way to begin and let Chelsea settle into the session before the main event.

Before the proposal, we wandered over to the Legion Theatre and explored around there. The Legion is a 1930s movie house now home to the Pumphouse Players, one of Georgia’s oldest continuously running community theatres — and it has the visual character to match. Art Deco bones, historic signage, the kind of building that rewards a photographer willing to look for the right angle.

After the proposal, Chelsea and Hunter did a costume change — Tim Burton-esque was the vibe, which I loved immediately. We explored the square’s murals, found the yellow walls of a shaved ice booth that were genuinely excellent, and eventually circled back to where we started. By the time we finished, we had covered most of downtown Cartersville and it still hadn’t felt like enough.

Why Downtown Cartersville Works for Photography

Cartersville is about an hour north of Atlanta in Bartow County, and downtown specifically has been steadily building a public art program through the Downtown Development Authority. The result is a square with active mural installations, a Photo Fence project, and an Art Walk initiative — all of which means the visual material changes and grows over time.

Combined with the Grand Theatre, the Legion, the historic 1903 Courthouse (now the Bartow History Museum), the local shops and restaurants, and the easy walkability of the whole area, it’s genuinely one of the better small city portrait environments in North Georgia.

For couples with a connection to Cartersville, there’s the added layer of meaning that always changes how a session feels. Chelsea and Hunter weren’t posing in front of landmarks — they were moving through a place that was actually theirs.
